History Description
The Henry Pingle House was built c. 1849 by Henry Pingle Senior. Lot 19, Concession 6 was drawn in 1794 by Christian Paul Husing, who arrived in Philadelphia aboard the Catharina as part of the original group of Berczy settlers. Paul was listed on the property in 1803 as a single male aged 42. It appears that Husing did not fulfill his settlement duties, for it was William Weeks who was granted the patent to the property in 1804. The Henry Pingle House is an excellent example of a rural dwelling constructed in the mid 1800s that underwent a major remodelling in the first quarter of the 20th century. The house illustrates the transition from a simple Georgian style, 1 storey cottage, built c. 1850 to an Arts and Crafts 1 ½ storey dwelling. The Henry Pingle House Sr. House is of significance for its association with the rural agricultural community of Colty's Corners. Together with the Stiver Tenant house and Vincent Wagg Houses this cluster remains a reminder of those first farming families who settled in the north of Markham Township early in its history.
