History Description |
|
The James D. Harrington house is a rare example of a vernacular building where the identity of the builder and an exact date of construction are known. According to the records of the Harrington Planning Mill in Unionville, the house was constructed in 1874.
James Darius Harrington (1830-1904) was the second son of Rueben and Sarah (palmer) Harrington. He married Catherine Ann Burke (1826-1907) in 1850 and their family included 11 children.
The Harrington House is a on and a half storey frame dwelling with a T-Shaped plan. It is located on its original fieldstone foundation and is oriented to face east. The Harrington House stands on its original site but with a rural landscape undergoing the process of urbnanization. Ultimately the house will be a remnant of the area's rural past, integrated with new development near the eastern limits of a large residential subdivision.
