History Description
The Adam Hagler House is a simple vernacular Markham Township farmhouse dating from the second quarter of the 19th century. While modest in scale and simple in design, the house nevertheless reflects the essential principles of Georgian architecture in its balanced three bay façade, gable roof with eaves returns, and rectangular plan. The rear wing is a later addition. The original cladding is believed to have been roughcast stucco, a popular finish for frame dwellings in 19th century York County. The existing vertical tongue and groove board siding was added as a renovation in the early 20th century. This cladding treatment is interesting for its particular association with Markham Township and the surrounding area. Historical research points to Adam Hagler as the builder of this house in the mid 1830s to 1840 period. He may have come from a Pennsylvania German background, as many of Markham's early settlers did. Sebastian Hagler purchased the property from Jacob Meisener, a Berczy settler, in 1812. Christian Hagler, possibly a son, sold to Adam Hagler in 1835. The preservation of modest houses such as this one is important in reflecting the history of Markham, as it shows the range of housing types that existed historically as they continue to do today.
