The oldest part of the house was the home of Richard Sylvester, an Irish immigrant, and his family. Sylvester lived in Scarborough Township before coming to Markham. His name appears at this location in township directories from 1837 to 1866. In 1828 he purchased an acre of land from Peter Milne, at the south east corner of Lot 9, Concession 7. According to the 1861 census, the house was described as being of frame construction, built in 1845; however in the 1851 census the house was described as being of “board” construction (plank-on-plank). In the census records, Richard Sylvester is listed only as “gentleman” for his occupation, meaning a retired person. He lived here with his wife, Margaret, also born in Ireland, and their Canadian-born children. |
