Samuel Kendrick owned both properties (lot 30 and 31, west half concession 6) at the time of the 1861 Census, his home may have been described on the wrong lot. It seems likely that Samuel had the brick home built in time to give the original log home to John Hoover and his bride as a wedding present. (1859). This hypothesis is further supported by the fact that David, Samuel's youngest son, is listed in a brick home on Lot 31, Concession 6, on the 1901 Census. It was general practice that the youngest son inherited the family farm in Mennonite culture. According to the 1851 and 1861 Census reports, Samuel and Rosanna Kendrick may have been born in the U.S. but their children were born in Markham suggesting they immigrated circa 1830. They were farmers, originally of Mennonite faith. |
