History Description
In 1806, Moses Gamble rented the 200 acre property from the Crown. In 1828, the property was deeded to King's College in 1852. Since the 1837 commercial directory lists a William Pool at this location and the 1846-7 directory lists John Pool on the site, it appears that the Pools rented the property from King's College prior to their purchase. The relationship between William and John Pool has not yet been confirmed but they are likely father and son. The 1851 Census lists John Pool (age 48), Thomas Pool (age 21) and John's second wife Ann nee McGillivray (age 26) in the same household. The Regional Assessment Office database lists the date of construction as 1850 (Renovated). The house is illustrated in this approximate location on the 1853-54 map of Markham Township.
