History Description
William Forster came to Markham from Northumberland, England in 1830, along with his widowed mother and siblings. He was a farmer, a partner in a wood turning factory north of Unionville, and a founding member of the Reynolds Chapel, a Methodist church at Locust hill. He married Barbara Wurts (1824-1893) and raised four sons on the family homestead, which had initially been leased, but was later purchased from William Robson in 1844. The Forster family bible is a treasured artefact in the collection of the Markham Museum. A feature that distinguishes this stone house from other Markham examples is the raised basement, which contains an original kitchen.
