History Description
The rear portion of this building is the former Markham Village High School, built in 1879 to replace the Markham Village Grammar School, established in 1858. In 1892 a large two-storey wing was added to front of the building. Josiah Hall of Unionville was awarded the contract to construct the new section, which became the main part of the high school. The older building was then used as a science room. The 1892 addition was modified in the mid-1920s with new windows, new entrance vestibules and the removal of the belfry, bringing the building to its current appearance. In 1954, the new Markham District High School was constructed on Church Street, and the old building was acquired by the Markham Union Masonic Lodge (which was established in 1857). In 2009, the building was converted to commercial office use. At that time, interior architectural features of the 1890s section of the former school were uncovered and restored, including pressed metal ceilings.
