History Description |
Located on the north half of Lot 9, Concession 11, which was an irregular-shaped lot containing 8 acres as a result of the gore concession. Thomas Craig received the Crown grant for the lot in 1844 and immediately sold it to William Cornelius. In 1851, William Cormelius sold the southern 1/4-acre parcel fronting on the York-Durham Line to Patrick McPhillips. This southern part lot changed hands numerous times but William Cornelius retained ownership of the northern portion, on which the subject dwelling is located, until 1878. Born in England and of Wesleyan Methodist faith, William Cornelius and his wife, Catharine were 52 and 46 years of age respectively on the 1851 Census. Three other young adults were living in their household: Rosanna DeLong, aged 17; Peter Richards, aged 19; and Augustine Morrison, age 17. All are listed as residing in a one-storey frame house.
