History Description
The Adam Clendenen House was built c. 1840 by Adam Clendenen, a member of one of Markham's most prominent early settler families. John Clendenen Senior, originally from Ireland, received the Crown grant for 200 acres on Lot 17, Concession 8, and later subdivided the land into 6 parcels for his descendents. It was the great nephew of John who built The Adam Clendenen House after he purchased the lot in 1832. The son of John was also named Adam Clendenen, who was willed this north east parcel of the lot. He gave his life in the War of 1812. This house also served as an important reminder of the historic agricultural tradition of Markham. The interior house features substantial baseboards, window and door trim and the original wood floors are in excellent condition. All of this is original to the house.
