In 1844, Michael Eby purchased the western 100 acres of Lot 21, Concession 7 from King’s College, the forerunner of the University of Toronto. In 1860, Eby sold a one-acre parcel of his farm to Elizabeth McLaughlin, who was married to William McLaughlin, a labourer from Whitchurch Township. The family initially resided in a one-storey log dwelling, but by about 1872 they had built a modest frame house. When the 1871 census was taken, William McLaughlin’s occupation was given as “store-keeper.” After the death of her husband, the widowed Elizabeth continued to reside on the property, at least until the time of the 1891 census. |
