History Description |
Briarwood Farm, formerly addressed as 4031 16th Avenue was constructed c. 1842 on land originally Clergy Reserve. The property initially stretched from Kennedy Road to Warden Avenue along the original road to Unionville and contained 200 acres. The first owner-builders were Scotsman of some wealth, this affluence reflected in the structure's large windows. To have such large window openings in the 19th century was a luxury as the cost of glazing was so expensive. Until 1945 when Dean and Evelyn Hughes, the third owners purchased the property, the main house remained virtually unchanged, It is interesting to note that after this purchase, Dean Hughes published a lively account of the property entitled "And So We Bought A Farm". The house is in good condition and is yet another example of preservation of a heritage house that is certainly an important asset to the City.
