History Description
This house and property were originally part of the glebe land associated with St. Philip’s Anglican Church, donated by the Reverend Vincent P. Mayerhoffer. The Rectory was constructed c.1850 to house the Reverend George Hill, who also served as rector of Grace Anglican Church in Markham Village. It replaced an earlier dwelling that was home to Reverend Mayerhoffer and his family from 1832 until he relocated to Whitby in the early 1840s. The last rector to reside in the c.1850 Rectory was Reverend G. B. Johnson. In 1913, the church moved to a new location within the village of Unionville, and the Rectory was sold to become a private residence. The cemetery remained to mark the former location of St. Philip’s. In 1986, the congregation returned to their old site a built a new church to the south of the historic cemetery and former Rectory.
