History Description
The John Stiver House was originally built on Lot 13, Concession 4 c.1850 by John Stiver and later relocated further north to its current location. It is an excellent example of a vernacular Georgian frame. John Stiver Jr., son of Berczy settler John Nicholas Stiver, was the first child of European origin to be born in Markham. He fought in the War of 1812 at age 17. Captain G. Schuetze gave Stiver part of Lot 13, Concession 4, when Stiver married his daughter, Mary Anne Schuetze. John dedicated part of the land for St. John's Lutheran Church and cemetery in 1825. In the late 1980s, when the Stiver House was threatened with demolition, the house was relocated and restore by current owner. The rear part of the house is an other relocated vernacular cottage which was originally used by farm workers.
