History Description
The house known as "Cricklewood" at 54 Cricklewood Crescent is one of the best examples in Markham of a house built in the Neo-classical style. It was built c. 1845 by John Brunskill, owner-operator of the Pomona Mills in Thornhill. Cricklewood is a two storey red brick house with a low pitch hip roof. Buff bricks articulate the belt course, window heads and quoins. A five bay façade has windows symmetrically placed about a central door. The windows are slightly cambered with lugsills and shutters. One of the most important features of the house is the main doorway. It includes delicately mullioned side and transom lights flanked pilasters which support a finely proportioned entablature.
